ChannelStrip does. In addition, I often employ the high-pass filter on the compressor side chain and then lower the cut-off frequency to get more compression. It’s like a second threshold control, but it has its own, uniquely musical effect.”

A bucket full of old school goodness...
Character is a plug-in that lets you add the luscious distortion characteristics of classic analog circuits to your source tracks. To create Character we asked top flight tracking, mixing and mastering engineers to send us their favorite analog hardware; the mic pres, DIs and EQs that they used for recording, mixing and mastering. We then used SpectraFoo to measure the ways that these processors add lovely, gooey analog distortion to the sound run through them and modeled this distortion using our proprietary +DSP technology.
Character provides over 20 different models, incorporating the sound of tubes, transformers and solid state devices. Character has a Drive control (and autodrive) to allow you to push the distortion even harder for over-the-top sound mangling.
As Ed Abbott of Universal Mastering says, “Character is so cool, because it has all of the good stuff and none of the bad. Who ever heard of noiseless, phase coherent non-linear distortion? Create your perfect space
HaloVerb is a plug-in that allows you to add ambience and depth to your recordings. Based on the original HaloVerb hardware implementation for 2d-Expanded Metric Halo interfaces, the HaloVerb plugin expands on the great algorithmic sound to give you more flexibilty and control. Use the reverb impulse to see the reverberant field as you make adjustments, or hide the graphics and let your ears be your guide.
According to mix engineer Billy Decker, “It’s the perfect snare reverb – very thick and three-dimensional. After every snare hit, I can hear the little bits of dust crumbling in the background, little fairies floating around in the background. It’s very deep!”

Visceral, Gritty, Musical Feedback Delay
MH Dirty Delay is a fantastic-sounding feedback delay processor with integrated Character and Filters in the delay path. Use it to create awesome vintage echo and tape-delay style sounds as well as create lush and subtle spaces in a mix.
Not just a musical feedback delay, MH Dirty Delay is something special. With integrated Filters and Character in the feedback path, you can make it clean or dirty, vintage or futuristic, subtle or nasty.
With dual delay lines, crossfeed, feedback and distortion control, Dirty Delay is capable of creating extraordinarily rich and complex textures and patterns from your audio. A Surgical Strike On Stubborn Sibilance
Precision DeEsser is a plug-in that allows you to manipulate your tracks and remove excessive high frequency content. It combines the high precision filter technology and dynamics processing of ChannelStrip with the metering and analysis of SpectraFoo to allow you zero in on offending frequencies and correct them quickly and efficiently.
Precision DeEsser features comprehensive listening controls to allow you to hear to hear exactly what is (or isn't) being removed; you may choose five different points in the processing chain to monitor. As with all Metric Halo plug-ins, parameters are fully automatable to give you full control of the processing during mixdown.
The Precision DeEsser is an essential tool for vocal tracks, but can also be used for sound design and other audio processing.
Producer and Composer Andy Price notes that “Precision DeEsser is the only DeEsser that I’ll use now. It gives all of my vocals a noticeably warmer output, which is something that I’ve never considered or experienced with any other DeEsser. I sometimes even throw it on the master bus together with ChannelStrip 3 to clear out anything edgy or grating. ChannelStrip 3 comes first with an overall high-end boost, followed by Precision DeEsser to give a crisp, but warm, sound to the overall mix.”
Mix Engineer Billy Decker says, “I use Metric Halo’s Precision DeEsser plug-in to do the de-essing; actually, I use two instances. One for traditional de-essing and the second for what I call 'de-honking.' Using so much compression brings a lot of junk to the surface, including the nasty nasal sound that pretty much every voice has between 1.5kHz and 2kHz. By setting the second Precision DeEsser to that frequency, everything smooths out and sounds much nicer. I've used a lot of de-esser plug-ins, but I find that Metric Halo’s version is noticeably smoother and more transparent. Where other plug-ins can sound grainy and degrade the signal, Precision DeEsser is colorless and pleasant.”
Sometimes the best EQ is a compressor
Multiband Dynamics is a plug-in that allows you to add clarity, warmth and punch to your mix. It shapes timbral quality of your audio by running it through a three-band crossover, and providing independent compression in each frequency range before summing the result through a limiter. Without compression, you can broadly shape the timbre of your tracks, and if you need dynamic range control or dynamic EQ, simply enable the compressor for the band.

Grammy Award-Winning Engineer Gary Noble found that “The Multiband Dynamics processor recently helped me rescue part of a song,” he shared. “A break included a bass synth that was completely different from the bass texture used in the rest of the song. Raw, the new bass just didn’t fit in the song. But with a few moments and the Multiband Dynamics processor, I was able to lock it right in.”
Grammy Award-Winning Engineer Tony Maserati adds, “Metric Halo has a long history of solid performance that uses surprisingly little DSP resources. A testament to Metric Halo’s stability is the fact that I’m now using Metric Halo’s Multiband Dynamics plug-in on my mix bus. That’s unusual for me, and I wouldn’t do that if I wasn’t completely confident.”
Dynamics in modern recordings is always a challenge, and Grammy Award-Winning Producer and Engineer Julian King has found that “Unfortunately dynamic range in commercial recordings is almost non-existent and there seems to be an expectation for songs to be nearly full scale from start to finish,” continued King. “My job is to create the impression of dynamics in the mix even if they aren’t really there, as there has to be some lift as you transition from, say, a verse to a chorus. My mentor Lynn Peterzell called this “illusionary dynamics.” The Metric Halo Multiband Dynamics does a great job of keeping things nice and full and musical while still delivering a modern, full-scale output. It does its job, but you don’t sense that it is beating up the music.”
Expand your horizons
Multiband Expander is a plug-in that allows you to manage, suppress and control noise in your tracks in a frequency-sensitive way. The 3-band phase-coherent crossover network directs the audio to three independent expanders that you configure to smoothly suppress noise below the threshold you specify. The expanders can also be configured to change the feel of rhythmic patterns by suppressing elements that are played more softly – all in a frequency-sensitive way.
Multiband Expander features SpectraFoo™ spectral analysis to allow you to zero-in on crossover points and thresholds quickly and with confidence.
The Multiband feature of the expander is extremely useful for controlling noise and hum in guitar tracks, as you can attack the noise more aggressively than the desired signal.
While Multiband Expander is not an essental tool for every mix, when you need it, it will really save the day!
When Grammy Nominated Engineer Ariel Borujow used the Production Bundle to mix Charlie Red, he found that the tracks were noisy at times and he was able to use the Multiband Expander to carve out the noise. The very accurate spectrum analysis feature allowed him to zero in and position the bands for maximum effect.
Sophisticated Transient Modifier & Waveshaper
TransientControl is a plug-in that allows you to modify dynamics in ways that just aren’t possible with traditional compressors. You can directly change the transient (“attack”) and sustain of your audio; this allows you to make your tracks more punchy, or smooth them out so they sit in a mix.
TransientControl analyzes your audio and distinguishes between the onset of sounds (the attack), the sustain of sounds and the decay of sounds (the release). With three gain controls you can dial in the relative level of these three elements of the sound.
TransientControl can enhance the attacks of finger-picked guitar, or mute the attack of strumming. Use it to make an instrument sit in the mix or pop out. Control the snap of a snare without affecting the ring. Even use it to change the feel of a percussion pattern.
TransientControl does its magic in real-time with no latency, so you can use it for mixing and live.
