SDX Music City USA review by

Music City USA a.k.a Nashville is one of the towns I dream of seeing one day, as a musician I feel that country has always had a special heart in the songs and sound.

From Toontrack I wanted them to deliver the drum part of country to our computers and I had set my hopes high that they had managed to do this.

Using The Music City USA SDX

I loaded the Default kit that is based around the PB Drum Co kit, and start testing things out.

The kick has a somewhat light plastic sound and shines in the higher frequencies, it was not fully my cup of tea no mater what flavour (open, DPA) I used but that is a very personal feeling.

The Black beauty 5×14”  has allot of potential and sounds great even with no tweaks done.

The Toms are spot on, they have a nice full sound that I rely like, and on the harder velocity hits I can nearly hear the tips hit the skin on the drums.

The included Hi-hat also has a bit of the stick tip sound in the closed Hi-hat hit, when going on the more open hits and pedal the Hi-hat rings perfectly.

The crashes, Chinas and Cymbals sounded very nice, and to me the Bell hits was super nice.

As I move on to the Slingerland kit and hit the Kick I now found my self smiling, That is one nice kick if you ask me!  A lot of body, sweet roundness, a bit of beater and great fatness.

The downside here is the Toms but that again is totally personal, The Slingerland kit sadly is even worse on the Toms count as it only holds two Toms and they sounded  somewhat damped to me.

One thing most modern drum library’s have is a nice Velocity response curve, The Music City USA SDX follows that example perfectly so programming drums that does not feel like a drum-machine is a breeze.

  • Great sound
  • Affordable
  • Lots of tweaking headroom

  • Only 3 Toms

So did Toontrack manage to bring Nashville to my computer? Well this is as close to Nashville as I will get in a long time. I am very picky when it comes to how a drum sounds in a mix, and I take a loot of time listening to how a drum sounds and fits in a mix.

The Music City USA SDX has a lot going for it, specially for anyone into Country or Modern Rock. The Music City SDX is perfect for anyone who records music with a more rock based Strat like guitar or uses acoustic guitars allot and I believe this combination will work beautifully. The samples in this SDX follows the Toontrack standard of quality, and the sounds has a huge headroom for personal tweaks. The week spot is not only for this SDX, it’s a thing I have seen allot and really wish I would se changed in the feature… The three Tom setup!

I really would like a forth Tom around to add more flavour and strength to the song but all in all The music City USA SDX is a very nice expansion for the Toontrack Superior Drummer 2.
