Push & Pull Equalizer

The ‘Equalizer’ module on the Paradox is designed to make push-pull filtering easy. This powerful equalization technique, with its recognisable filter curves, can help you bring your mixes to life, by adding uncanny definition to drums, bass, guitar, synths and vocals. Besides the filter’s ‘Frequency’ and ‘Gain’ controls, Paradox gives you three controls to dial in the push-pull shape in an easy and intuitive way. The ‘Curve’ control sets the width of the filter, the ‘Balance’ control sets the complementary filter boost, and the ‘Twist’ control biases the push-pull filter to the left or right. With the additional choose between stereo, mid and side mode per filter, the paradox ‘Equalizer’ provides you with an extremely musical workflow that delivers pronounced filtering effects in no time.

Compressor

The ‘Compressor’ module on the Paradox uses SoundSpot’s ‘infinite’ gain reduction setup, and lets you emulate the behaviour of analog compression with its continuous ‘RMS-time’ control. Together with it’s continuous ‘mix’ feature, the Paradox ‘Compressor’ module lets you apply smooth compression in a very flexible way, as well as different parallel compression styles like ‘New York Compression’. In addition, the Compressor features a high pass sidechain-filter that allows you to ignore heavy kick and bass parts to achieve steady and predictable results even when compressing powerful electronic tracks.

The first in our range kicks off with KINETIK, a plugin we have closely developed with STANDERWICK, who in just 5 years has become one of the top-selling global electronic dance music producers with multiple No.1 selling tracks and remixes for Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto to name a few.

This plugin encapsulates and represents STANDERWICK”s production workflow and is a unique tool that bridges across all music genres. We have created something that we are confident will find its way into your production workflow and become a definite reach-to plugin you will use on all of your projects.

KINETIK is a Compressor, EQ and Overdrive in one single easy to use plugin that you're going to find very useful indeed!

Below is an overview of the plugin’s parameters and how to use the Kinetik to achieve results that will transform your mixes.

The signal chain runs from left to right, starting with the Reduction Parameter.

As an optical style compressor, there is no need for attack and release parameters. You simply pull back the rotary slide to begin the signal reduction. Attached to the reduction function is an option to select between, Transparent (Circles Icon), Analog (Flame Icon) & Optimised (Transient Icon). Each of these settings introduce a different character to the sound allowing you to achieve the best results based on your source material.

Next is the EQ section. This is a 4 band parametric EQ that included high & low shelf/cut options, and also a bell filter for notching or boosting select frequencies. The bandwidth is set to a permanent 12dB oct which after extensive testing has proved to deliver the most natural results. Each EQ can be selected by clicking one of the slide icons.

The final parameter in the chain is the Drive section, which allows you to increase additional harmonics to the sound. The drive function also has the option to select between, Transparent (Circles Icon), Analog (Flame Icon) & Optimised (Transient Icon) the same as found on the Reduction parameter.

To the lower left and right of Kinetik you will find input and output sliders, this allows you to control the gain of the plugin.

The bottom of the plugin we have included a signal flip parameter which changes the order of the compressor and EQ, along with a global bypass button.

Each of the parameters in the Kinetik includes an individual bypass control allowing for precise A/B testing.

The meter section displays input gain, output gain and reduction. The reduction meter can be flipped from 0 to -12 display to 0 to -4 display for more accurate monitoring.

Getting the best results

To get the very best results from the Kinetik, you need to ensure that the input and output meters are bouncing into the green lines using the input and output sliders. You’ll know if you’ve gone too far as clip lights will be displayed when signals are pushed too hard. Also keeping the gain reduction around -3dB to -4dB will give the best results on most material, however, this may need to be driven a little harder on some material.

Cyclone

The Cyclone interface has been designed for ease of use, with the controls laid out from left to right in a typical order that most engineers will follow when making adjustments, enabling you to speed up your workflow.

Saturation

The saturation is tape style soft clipping with 100% stereo linking when applied equally to both channels. This preserves the stereo image making the Cyclone perfect for mastering.

The intensity of the saturation is dependent on the threshold and ratio of the compressor, or to the potential gain reduction of the compressor, with the saturation knob itself being responsible for mixing in the saturation.

As the saturation effect is dependent on the compressors threshold and ratio settings. This means that the harder the ratio and threshold parameters are pushed, the more pronounced the saturation effect will be. You can then use the saturation control to dial in a value that works with your mix.

When the saturation parameter is set to zero, there will be no saturation. Conversely, when the parameter is set to full, the maximum saturation will be added based on the positioning of the threshold and ratio controls.

In addition, the saturation is smoothed out in a way it mimics "tape hysterisis".

Mid/Side Processing

The Mid/Side functionality of the Cyclone allows you to process the stereo information independently from the mono information. This is useful when a mixdown requires a wider feel to the stereo image or the mid (mono) information greater definition from the sides, to achieve a better result during playback on mono sound systems.

The Mid/Side function is perfect for adding additional sparkle to a well-mixed track, and also gives the user great control to correct any irregularities in the stereo image.

Solo Channel

When creating the Cyclone, we realised that a solo function much the same as you will find in your DAW is actually much more useful when making changes than a simple bypass button, although an anti click global bypass parameter has been added to the unit as well.

The solo buttons will allow you to singularly monitor the left or right side channel whilst you are in Stereo mode or monitor the mid information or the side information independently when in Mid/Side mode. This results in a quicker, more precise workflow when compressing the mix. 

Channel Linking

The channel linking is set up as default when the plugin is first opened which makes the editing process quicker. If however you unlink the channels and make amends, but then later decide to link the channels, the first control amended will cause the opposite side control to reflect the changes.

Many compressors will make a direct copy from left to right when the channel link button is pressed. When linking is set up in this way, it provides a very rigid user experience, with users often finding they lose the settings they wanted to keep.

Our intelligent linking system makes linked editing much more flexible and intuitive for the user.

The gain reduction caused by the compression will be equal in both channels if the settings are the same, whether the controls are linked or not. This prevents the centre of the stereo image moving around if the signals differ from each other. That being said, if you apply different settings to the two channels, the gain reduction will be different, but because of the hidden stereo linking function, the centre of the stereo image will move in a predictable and controlled manner, which is essential when mastering.
