If you thought modulating effects were dull and boring, then think again. UVI is pretty much trying to reboot your modulation thinking with Thorus and has created an effect that gives you plenty of the old-school but introduces so many simple parameters, oodles of power and such a lovely, simple interface that it almost makes this effect an instrument in its own right.
The installation process was relatively straightforward - as ever with iLok, there seems to be at least one stage too many - thankfully no dongles required, just a free account. Load the plugin up and the first thing that strikes you is the simple modern GUI and controls - Speed, Depth and so on - that show you exactly what you have dialled in.
So to the concept and yes, its modulation - fat choruses, swirling and vibrating filtering, its all here. But there are several features that set Thorus apart: the first of which is the plug-in's eight voice architecture, which allows more thickening or more extreme applications. The filtering and EQ side of the plug-in is fully featured, too, and with click and drag editing, is very easy to implement - a great feature about the plugin as a whole. Then there are the Standard and Wide modes that allow you to step up the stereo spread. But be careful not to over do it.
Presets are spread over six sonic categories and display a large range of sounds - although there could be more - from subtle to very musical. This really is a plugin that not only provides a classic gentle swirling, but also a creativity you might not have experienced on more standard chorus - like effects. It's a plugin that you'll start with using subtly and then very likely use as an in depth creative tool with certain instruments, almost as an extension of them, as there's so much on offer. But the best aspect is that GUI- it's simple and attractive, but more importantly, just easy to use and change either by dial or by dragging, a great tool.
