Also included in this bundle is the Producer's Guide to Scaler. In this course, you will learn how to use this fantastic tool in a variety of scenarios so that you can start including it into your creative workflow right away. Producertech Senior Tutor Rob Jones introduces some of the fundamentals of the plugin, such as how to choose a scale and then lock notes to the keyboard to enable easy playing of melodies using instruments in the DAW.

Scaler

The Creative Chord Composer

A first of its kind, Scaler can determine what key and scale you’re in and suggest chords that match your music, or it can inspire a tune from scratch by providing a set of initial chords in an unexplored key. With the onboard bank of over 2,000 scales and modes including genre and artist presets, there’s more than enough to keep the juices flowing.

Once you’ve determined a scale, Scaler lays out basic diatonic chords for you to audition, and lets you take things further with dozens of chord variations and voicings to try out. Theory buffs can also get an insight into each chord’s harmonic function.

Ready to put together a progression? Simply drag and drop chords into Scaler’s sequencer, change up octaves and inversions, edit the voicing, and record or drag the progression into your DAW.

Benefits

  • Discover your music’s key and explore alternative scales and chord sets
  • Choose from hundreds of keys, and get the harmonic flavours of pro artists
  • Easily audition chords and find alternative voicings and common substitutions
  • Quickly build intelligent progressions by dragging chords into Scaler’s chord sequencer
  • Drag chords and progressions from anywhere in the plugin out to your DAW

Producer's Guide to Scaler

In this course, you will learn how to use this fantastic tool in a variety of scenarios so that you can start including it into your creative workflow right away.

Course Breakdown

Module 1 - Jazzy Hip Hop Groove

In the first groove, on a jazzy Hip Hop tip, Producertech Senior Tutor Rob Jones introduces some of the fundamentals of the plugin, such as how to choose a scale and then lock notes to the keyboard to enable easy playing of melodies using instruments in the DAW. He then moves on to Scaler’s Arpeggiator and Strummer facilities, before showing how chords sequences are made using the Songs presets as well as entirely from scratch.

Module 2 - Liquid DnB Groove

The next module then guides students through the making of a Liquid DnB groove, inspired initially by a moody chords sample, which is converted to MIDI and then run into Scaler’s Detection section to work out the harmony involved. This allows a variation on the theme to be explored, sequenced into a fast arp pattern and accompanied by a rolling bass. Rob then shows how to reincorporate the original sample back into the groove to go in an alternative direction, by transposing each of the parts in the required way.

Module 3 - Deep House Groove

Combining a variety of techniques for the last module, Rob builds up a pounding Deep House groove, by playing in a bassline with a MIDI keyboard, then using Scaler to work out chords and arpeggios to accompany it, along with a breakdown bassline that modulates to a different key.

Advanced Theory

In this course, you will learn how analysis melodic content, how to build simple and complex chords in the major and minor key and how to modulate between keys using the cycle of fifths.

Course Breakdown

Module 1 - Basics Recap - Working with a Jazzy Break

Rob works through all of the subjects covered on the Beginner’s course by first analysing the melodic content in a bassline, to figure out the key of the track, and then showing many different examples of monophonic and polyphonic accompaniment to go with it.

Module 2 - Related Major and Minor Keys

An intro to related keys, starting with the simplest, the relative major or minor. After explaining what it is, Rob shows how it works in a breakbeat track, demonstrating the changes that a melodic phrase needs to make in order to work with the new harmony.

Module 3 - Advanced Chords I - Working with Triads

This first chords module is a detailed exploration of the ways in which diatonic triads present themselves in a major and minor scale, providing a wealth of knowledge about which ones to use when creating triad chord progressions.

Module 4 - More Related Keys

Rob moves on to additional common keys to modulate to when producing, beginning with the dominant. This is shown in a number of examples, with one being the creation of a breakdown in a House track, and the others a range of compositions that utilise a ‘cycle of fifths’ technique.

Module 5 - i-iv-VI Progression - Liquid DnB Groove

A guide to creating melodic content around a bassline, playing a i-iv-VI pattern of notes. Basslines and triads are recorded into a project and then edit, with an additional descending melody played in on top.

Module 6 - Advanced Chords II

This second chords module expands the palette further with richer and more interesting chords like 7th and 9ths, both of which are used to form chord progressions in grooves, with one played in and edited and the other drawn in entirely with the mouse.
