Product information

Originally recorded in 2006 and released by Tonehammer in 2008, this library has become a classic, finding its way into an endless roster of soundtracks, trailers, commercials and records. This particular instrument has been in Soundiron co-founder Chris Marshall’s family for many years, before being passed on from one new home to the next. This was also one of the very first instruments Mike Peaslee deep-sampled.

Soundiron captured 3-4 velocity layers on all keys, with added round-robin variation on the two middle octaves in the mf range. There are actually two independent release trigger samples for every note to better replicate the natural behaviour of the instrument as Soundiron recorded it. Each note has separate string release samples and key release samples. The “key” release trigger is the soft, distant sounding mechanical wooden “thud” that naturally occurs whenever any key is lifted, even after the resonance has faded. The piano was so old and rickety that you'd have to very slowly releases the sustain pedal or all of the hammers come crashing back down on the strings and occasionally even get stuck there if you lifted your foot too quickly.

For this brand new 2.1 version of the Granny Piano, Soundiron have tweaked the mapping and layering to make it feel more responsive and natural, combined the “Tuned” and “Untuned” versions into a single preset with an easy Tuning mode switch and implemented the proprietary voice management technology to minimize noise-floor build-up while maintaining performance. Soundiron have also incorporated a full range of user controls to allow total sonic shaping. and fine control over every detail of the sound. The brand new atmospheric sustains presets include 12 custom ambiences that can be blended and shaped freely.

Note: This product now includes both the standard Native Instruments Kontakt 4.2.4 open format presets and the ReFill version, designed for Propellerhead's Reason 6.0.2.

Kontakt Format

The .nki presets in the Kontakt portion of this library are designed for the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.1 or later. Kontakt is an industry-standard advanced virtual instrument / software sampler platform.

This is a standard Kontakt open-format library, so the free Kontakt Player doesn't support this open-format Kontakt library. However, the sample directories are fully accessible to allow user customization, import and mapping into other wav-compatible software, sampler and synth formats.

The special Libraries tab doesn't support this open-format Kontakt library, but you can use the standard File browser tab, or import this library into the Kontakt database and Quickload tools for easy navigation, loading and organization.

Reason ReFill Format

The ReFill portion of this library is designed for the full retail version of Reason 6.0.2 or later. We’ve included 22 Combinator and 22 NN-XT presets in the ReFill package, featuring custom front panel user interface controls and artwork. These NN-XT and Combinator presets have been optimized for performance on 32 bit systems, with 16 bit sample data and a slightly reduced soundset to allow for lower memory usage. The sample directories are also fully accessible to allow user customization, import and mapping into other wav-compatible software, sampler and synth formats.
