Yoshinori Kadogaki (MORG) has spent over 25 years selecting units, and captured only those still in active service at a commercial studio. The response is left uncorrected; unit-to-unit differences are kept. The aim is the same experience as inserting the hardware itself.

"They both sound good, but I like this module better." — this is a conversation heard every day in studios, and it is peculiar to fully-discrete vintage gear. Even IC-based units show small differences depending on their recap state, but surface-mount designs barely differ at all. Differences worth calling "character" are hard to come by in the first place.
The builders of the day were not aiming for unit-to-unit variation. If anything, mass-produced gear is made so that neither unit-to-unit nor left/right differences appear. Years of servicing, and the accumulation of engineers and artists calling that one machine "wonderful", is what made it an "individual unit."

Rather than dragging out gear that had been sitting idle, we measure the units actually in use on the studio floor right now, as they are.

The developer is an engineer, is the studio owner, and understands analog circuitry well enough to service the gear himself. Having all three is rare. With borrowed gear, you cannot open it up to study it, nor can you service it before measuring.

Managing I/O levels, catching setting mix-ups, deciding when to re-record — we automated with scripts and AI every step where a human is prone to error, and built a capture environment that verifies each measurement one by one.
Confirmation by ear is a given; on top of that, we obtain accurate data from the environment-tuning stage onward. The target is serviced first when required.
The result: the difference between plugin and hardware falls within the same range as the difference between two hardware units of the same model. You can recall that individual unit with the same feel as picking one hardware unit off the shelf. (Null depth against the hardware recording: −28.6 to −33.5 dB, across all 16 models)
Fix the hardware. Don't round off the data.
The response is not rounded off. If a difference is unacceptable, we service the hardware side to resolve it before capture. It is the natural step when using hardware in a studio.
We bring the analog side into a state usable as a real insert, and leave the data taken from it untouched. We do not smooth out the response for convenience or for the sake of sales. Fundamentally, that is a different philosophy from today's market, where the temptation is always to lean toward convenient specs.
