The inimitable sound of a DAT machine pushed too hard

driveDAT is a saturation and degradation effect built around one piece of hardware behaviour: a DAT recorder being fed a signal that is too loud for it. Hiss that breathes with the programme, an input stage that squashes, and a converter that runs out of numbers, arranged in the order the deck did it.

Digital Audio Tape never became the consumer format Sony wanted. It became the professional one instead: the two-track master, the tape that went to the cutting house, the reason a bedroom mix could come out loud. A DAT deck has no tape saturation. What it has is a converter with a hard ceiling and an analogue front end with a little headroom above it. Push a mix into that and the input stage limits, then the converter flat-tops whatever gets past it, and with emphasis switched on it is the top end that clips first. Producers found that sound useful, and it is all over the dance and hip-hop records of the period.

driveDAT is arranged the way the deck was, not the way a lo-fi plugin usually is. Noise enters where the deck's noise floor entered. The input stage limits signal and hiss together as a single waveform, so a loud programme presses the hiss flat and distorts it out of the way. The converter samples, quantises and dithers what is left. The emphasis curve the format actually used, 50/15 microseconds, decides how hard the top end hits all of that, and undoes itself on the way out, which is why a hot DAT master sounds dense rather than fizzy.

Four stations, two knobs each, read left to right:

  • NOISE. The deck's floor, with an envelope the hardware never had. FLOOR sets how much, ENV how long it takes to fall away after the programme drops. Six characters: Tape, White, Vintage, Converter, Bright and Rumble. A drag-to-shape envelope editor with tempo-locked grid and snap.
  • PREAMP. GAIN is the knob that reproduces "the mix was too hot for the deck". DRIVE adds analogue-style saturation on top, oversampled up to 4x.
  • CONVERTER. RATE from 48 kHz down to 1 kHz and BITS from 16 down to 2, with no anti-alias filter, so everything above half the rate folds back into the audible band. 48 and 44.1 kHz are what the format offered; everything lower is the deck's converter taken somewhere it never went.
  • OUTPUT. MIX against a delay-matched dry path, LEVEL as a true master, and a hard ceiling at 0 dBFS.

A live ribbon across the top shows the real audio at every stage: the waveform mangled station by station, four panels of the same bar after each stage, the converter's sample-and-hold lattice, the noise envelope under your pointer, and a spectrum of what goes in against what comes out, measured rather than modelled.

Behind it, an Advanced screen with the switches that change how the chainis built. Emphasis Off, Soft or DAT. Converter Clip lowers the ADC's ceiling under the rounded peaks the front end leaves. Zero Glitch adds the step early converters had at every zero crossing. A portable-deck limiter with a release measured in seconds, for the pumping field-recorder sound. Noise Squash sets how hard the programme sits on the hiss. Sub Preserve splits the low end off before the chain and returns it clean, so an 808 stays whole while everything above it is crushed. Transient Mode keeps drums pointed. Oversampling 1x, 2x or 4x.

100 presets in 10 banks: Tape, Vinyl, Radio, Drums, Bass, Vocals, Jungle, Synth, Master and Destroy. The Jungle bank is the early drum and bass chain, one preset per recipe in the manual: the sampler on the break, the Reese squashed with the sub kept clean, the deck in the red, the dubplate master.

A/B compare that captures every setting. A preset browser with search, banks and favourites. Resizable interface at 75 to 150 percent. A user manual that covers the history of the format, every control, and a section on getting the early jungle and drum and bass sound out of it.
