The vihuela is a small fivestring guitar, characterized by its rounded back. In Costa Rica, the vihuela is made in a Mexican style, different from its original Spanish version, and the example in these recordings was made by the Escazú luthier David Mora. The vihuela is primarily used to perform mariachi and Latin rhythms such as son jarocho and huapango, but with globalization, it has lost popularity
