Roland Wave Expansion Boards—The Composer’s Toolkit 

Before virtual instrument plug-ins became commonplace, Roland keyboards and sound modules were the pro solution for accessing a wide variety of high-quality sounds in one place. Instruments like the JV-1080, XP-80, XV-5080, and numerous others offered the ability to expand their sounds with user-installable expansion boards, each loaded with a specialized sampled waveform set for different styles and genres.  

After debuting the concept in 1992 with the JV-80 synth, Roland’s wave expansion board releases eventually grew to over 30 titles across two formats and multiple generations of supported instruments.
