Expressive, experimental sound design
Preparation 2 creates a virtual world of augmented strings using Physical Audio's latest physical modelling techniques. Two strings collide with a rattle and a dynamic fret to deliver a rich palette of acoustic timbres, from unique instruments to experimental soundscapes.
Preparation is based on mathematical modelling of 3 basic elements; strings which can be configured as bars, a rattle that joins strings together, and a dynamic fret. Each voice contains a pair of strings which are excited with either a customisable pluck, a bow, or side-chained audio. The acoustic model's properties are tailored by you, generating a range of sounds from unique instruments to experimental soundscapes.
Features
- Physical models of 2 strings, a rattle and a fret using our latest collision modelling algorithms.
- Custom pluck builder to design your own excitation.
- Bowing option with variable position and bow force.
- Sidechain audio to excite the strings with external signals.
- The dynamic rattle element sits across the 2 strings and transfers energy from collisions on one end to the other. This has a variable mass on each end, as well as stiffness, gap and edge parameters.
- The dynamic fret sits underneath the strings and each one can hit it depending on the amplitude of vibration and the distance between them.
- Keyboard and Velocity modulation.
- 2 x LFOs to modulate real-time parameters.
- Multi-FX with EQ, Compressor, Mods, Shaper, and Delay/Reverb effects. The five modules that can be re-ordered to change the signal flow.
- MPE support with configurable Slide and Velocity.
- MTS-ESP micro tuning support.
- macOS Sierra 10.13 or above (AU/VST3/AAX), Intel or Apple Silicon
- Windows 11 (VST3/AAX), Intel or AMD processors
- All major DAWs supported, including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig, Reaper, etc
Reviews Summary
While it aims to provide a helpful overview, it may not capture every perspective or detail. We encourage you to read individual reviews to make an informed decision.
Reviewers praise Preparation 2 as a unique and inspiring physical-modeling synth that excels at creative sound design. They highlight its exceptional sound quality and organic, metallic, and experimental textures, noting its strength in generating plucked or bowed strings, cinematic soundscapes, and horror sound effects. While recognized as a niche instrument with a slight learning curve rather than a traditional everyday synth, users find its deep tweaking options and built-in effects highly rewarding.
