Alien Drive is a wavetable waveshaper and distortion plugin. Instead of one fixed distortion curve, the signal reads its way through a bank of 256 curves, and how far it travels through that curve is itself a control. Push it far enough and the signal folds back on itself rather than flattening, which is where it stops sounding like an overdrive. A germanium diode overdrive with a tunable tone band sits in front of the shaper, and a shelving EQ with a resonant peak sits behind it. Around all of it runs a modulation system: an envelope follower that walks the wavetable in time with your transients, and a tempo-locked LFO with seven destinations. From weight on a kick to metallic ringing, rhythmic folding and deliberate aliasing, Alien Drive covers distortion territory a clipper cannot reach.

- 16 x 16 Wavetable Bank: 256 curves at 2048 samples each. Curve X picks the family — a distinct character rather than a degree of the same thing — and Curve Y sets how sharply that family turns. Both axes interpolate, so you can stop between two curves, and those in-between positions are genuinely different nonlinearities rather than crossfades of their neighbours.
- Wavefolding Rather Than Clipping: Fold Gain sets how much of the wave a full-scale signal sweeps. Below noon you are shaping; past noon the signal folds and generates harmonics a clipper cannot produce. Fold Mix blends the shaped signal against the overdrive output, so the transient survives while the fold fills in behind it.
- Rotate: Shifts where in the wave the signal starts reading (−180 to +180 degrees). The curve keeps its shape, but the fold lands on a different part of the waveform and a different set of harmonics comes out.
- Envelope-Driven Wavetable Movement: Mod X and Mod Y push the curve position up to seven waves in either direction, following your transients — loud passages travel through the bank, quiet ones sit still. Env Release (1–1000 ms) decides how far the position actually travels between hits.
- Tempo-Locked LFO With Seven Destinations: Five modes — Sync, Trig, Free, Restart and Off — driving Fold Gain, Fold Mix, Clip, Tone, EQ Freq, Peak and Dry/Wet, each with its own bipolar depth. Restart begins at phase 0 every time you press play, so what you audition is what you record.
- Germanium Diode Overdrive: 0 to 60 dB of soft, asymmetric germanium clipping for weight and even harmonics rather than a hard edge. The Tone control is not an EQ on the output — it decides which 2.5-octave band is sent into the diodes, tunable from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, leaving everything outside it untouched.
- Resonant Shelving EQ: A low shelf and a high shelf that pivot around a shared corner, with a resonant peak at the same point, so one EQ Freq control (200 Hz to 3.2 kHz) moves the whole section at once. The peak's gain rises and its bandwidth narrows together, running from broad emphasis into focused ringing.
- Dynamics and Gate: A single-knob compressor ahead of the distortion evens out how hard different hits push into the shaper, and a noise gate after the EQ offers an adjustable threshold and a tapered release weighted toward the short times where drums live.
- Live Transfer Curve Display: The graph draws the shaper's actual transfer curve at the current settings, with a brighter band marking the span a full-scale input sweeps. It follows Curve X, Curve Y, Rotate and the envelope, so it moves as you play.
- Output Stage and Oversampling: Wet level, a parallel dry/wet mix, a hard 0 dBFS ceiling with up to 24 dB of drive into it sitting after the mix so the ceiling always holds, output trim, and a unity bypass for honest A/B. Off / 2x / 4x / 8x oversampling on the waveshaper and clipper with latency reported to the host — and Quality Off keeps aliased folding available, which is a legitimate sound in its own right.
