Saffron’s Emerging Artist Development Programme Returns to Combat Music Tech Gender Gap
Backed by the PRS Foundation, the initiative offers a £1,000 grant, a 5-day studio retreat, and expert mentoring for Black women and gender-diverse creators in the South West of England.
Bristol-based organisation Saffron has announced the return of their Emerging Artist Development Programme. Aimed at dismantling deep-rooted systemic barriers in music technology, the scheme is open to Black women and gender-diverse musical creators based in South West England.
With reports showing that less than 3% of professional music producers are women - and even fewer representing Black women, non-binary, and trans creators - initiatives like Saffron's programme provide a vital launchpad. By offering visibility, representation, and financial backing, the scheme has a proven track record of elevating unique voices. Saffron has previously helped launch the careers of standout artists like Marla Kether and Grove.
What the Programme Offers
The selected artists will undergo a year-long development journey running from September 2026 to August 2027. As currently announced by Saffron, the package includes:
- Financial & Technical Support: A £1,000 support grant to fund music creation, recording, and production, along with an annual subscription to the Saffron Members Club.
- Creative Space: An all-inclusive 5-day residential retreat at Migration Studios in Autumn 2026.
- Professional Mentoring: Up to six 1-2-1 production mentoring sessions with Pops Roberts (Ableton Certified Trainer), alongside a DistroKid self-release masterclass.
- Community & Performance: Monthly peer support sessions at Saffron's HQ in Stokes Croft, Bristol, culminating in a live showcase at Rough Trade Bristol in Summer 2027.
Note: All package details and grant offerings are set by Saffron and are subject to their official programme terms upon application.
Who Can Apply?
Saffron is looking for passionate producers, composers, and instrumentalists working in any genre - from electronic and club music to R&B, hip-hop, neo-classical, and experimental. Whether you practise music as a hobby or are already earning an income, the programme is open to all experience levels, provided you are aged 18 or older (there is no maximum age limit).
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Identify as a woman, non-binary, trans (trans man or woman), intersex, or gender non-conforming.
- Be of Black or mixed-Black heritage (e.g. Black British, Black African, or Black Caribbean).
- Be based in South West England for the duration of the programme (September 2026 - August 2027).
(Bands and collectives are welcome to apply, but only one Black member can be selected to participate in the activities.)
How to Apply
Applications are open now and close at 6:00 PM BST on 31 July 2026.
To apply, you'll need to read Saffron's application pack and fill out the form provided at the back of the document, submitting links to at least two tracks - demos or unreleased works are perfectly fine - that best represent your current sound. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an informal interview in August before the final three creators are chosen.
Saffron is also offering access support for those who find traditional form-filling or tight deadlines a challenge; you can request a video application or extra guidance by emailing hello@saffronmusic.co.uk.
Want to apply and take your production to the next level? Head over to Saffron's official Emerging Artist Development Programme page to download the application pack and submit your work.
