Gate

A gate acts like an actual gate, except as a plugin it shuts to a level that you predetermine. For instance, if you have a live drum recording and there is a lot of background noise from other instruments such as guitars, you can set the threshold of a gate to close between each drum hit, allowing only the drums through the gate thus achieving a cleaner sound.
