Distortion

The basis of distorting a sound is to increase the harmonic content of the incoming signal. This basically means it is creating more sound and thus increasing the volume (which is why many distortion plugins will come with an output gain allowing you to increase distortion while keeping the volume the same). Normally characterised on bass, yet can be creatively useful on many elements in music.
